While in her residence in the capital of Abuja, Nigerian news anchor Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu was assailed by armed robbers. They had broken into her apartment building and made a beeline for her home.
- To save herself from their attack, she opted to jump from her window. She was living in an apartment on the third floor, and she fell from a great height. When police arrived on the scene, they found Sommie unconscious on the floor.
- She was rushed ot a nearby hospital, but it was too little, too late. She lost her life shortly before arrival.
- “They picked her up there and then took her to Maitama General Hospital, where the doctors on duty tried as much as possible. To see whether they can resort to using CPR. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make it. And that was the story,” Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale said in a statement.
Targeted Attack
The attack by the armed robbers was clearly a targeted one. They broke into her building specifically and went straight to her apartment on the top floor. In the process, they shot one of the security men on the ground floor.
- “These are private guards, and one of them, who dared to challenge, sustained a gunshot. Under these conditions, panic would have resulted from this kind of environment,” the statement continues.
As a result of the death of the well-loved Nigerian news anchor, many people have reached out with their words of condolence. Her news channel, Arise, has shared its obituary on Instagram, expressing its sorrow at the loss of life.
“Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” they shared. “Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”
