If someone invited me down to the local baseball field for 100 innings, be it for a good cause or not, I would tell them where to shove their bat. But a group of masochistic players in Massachusetts thought they would give it a shot anyway.

The standard baseball game consists of about 9 innings spread over an average game length of 2 and a half hours in MLB. So, times that by 11, and you can get an idea of just how long these 100 baseball innings would take.

Bat’er Up: The group in Quincy, Massachusetts, decided to play 100 innings of baseball for a good cause. They aimed to raise funds for ASL research. Through multiple days of play, they hoped to garner the attention of wealthy donors.

  • Money raised by the lengthy ball game is being sent to the Angel Fund. They’re dedicated to combating ALS. This is a progressive nervous system disease. The debilitating condition attacks neurons, affecting walking, talking, and breathing.

Pesky Nor’Easter

The game had to be called off due to the Nor’easter blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The high winds, rain, and storm battering Massachusetts meant play was impossible. However, they still managed an impressive stretch and deserve every penny raised.

Halfway: The plan to reach 100 innings of baseball wasn’t realized. However, over the course of two days, the mad Massachusetts players managed 53. It’s a commendable effort, and I have no doubt they would have completed their goal given better weather conditions.

  • By the time they called it, the home team defeated the visiting team, 66 to 53. It was a close game spread over two days, and they were only halfway through. Given the remaining 47 innings, the baseball game could have gone either way.

They were playing for a noble cause and managed to collect together a few donations before the nor’easter came and spoiled their plans.

  • “Yesterday, we got a $5,000 check, so many of these people know ALS very well, so it’s unbelievable, tremendous camaraderie, it’s fabulous,” Kennedy, the founder of the charity, said. Over the 22 years of hosting the 100 innings of baseball event, they have raised over $1 million for the charity.
