Richard Gere Used to Be a Gymnast
Richard Gere was born August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, making the star 73 years old today. While many men in their 70s may be grandfathers, he didn’t become a poppa until 2000, when he was 50. But the road to fatherhood was also blessed with incredible success, which he worked hard for.
Richard Gere’s father, Homer Gere, was an insurance agent and his mother Doris was a housewife. Homer lived to be 100 years old before passing away on March 1, 2023. Homer and Doris raised Richard and his four siblings in Syracuse, New York. Richard trained in gymnastics and music as a child and specialized in playing the trumpet. He was so good at gymnastics that he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts for the sport in 1967! However, music won him over, prompting him to drop off after two years.
Gere Dropped Out of College to Pursue Theatre
Gere then played in a variety of bands throughout the New England area while also participating in theatre. By 1969, he was working with the Provincetown Players and Seattle Repertory Theatre. In 1973, Gere performed in London’s original production of the musical Grease. In 1979, he won a Theatre World Award after portraying a homosexual Holocaust victim in the Broadway production Bent.
While making a name for himself in theatre, Gere also had an early start in film and TV. His first film was a made-for-TV movie called Chelsea D.H.O. in 1973. He played Julian in the 1980 film American Gigolo. In 1983, Gere received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his role as Zack Mayo in An Officer and a Gentleman.
He received his second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor after starring alongside Julia Roberts in the 1990 film Pretty Woman. While he didn’t win, the film became a cult classic and cemented Gere as a household name. It also made Julia Roberts and him a cinematic favorite as a couple and they returned to star in Runaway Bride together ten years later.
Chicago Garnered Richard Gere a Golden Globe for Best Actor
Richard Gere had a chance to truly show the world his music and theatre talent in the 2002 film of the popular Bob Fosse choreographed musical Chicago. Starring as defense attorney Billy Flynn, Gere crooned and danced alongside Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The spicy, sexy musical originally came out on Broadway in 1975 and was based on a 1920s play of the same name. Gere finally won his Golden Globe for Best Actor for his work. He and the entire phenomenal cast of Chicago also won a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Cast and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Richard Gere is still busy making movies as an actor and a producer. He’s executive produced and produced six films, starting with Final Analysis in 1992 and the most recent being Time Out of Mind in 2014. He also produced and starred in Hachi: A Dog’s Tale in 2009. His most recent acting role was in the 2023 rom-com Maybe I Do.
Richard Gere Used to be Married to Cindy Crawford
Richard Gere’s first marriage was as the high-profile husband to supermodel Cindy Crawford. The two wed in 1991 but divorced only four years later. They met at the late photographer Herb Ritts’ home.
“I was 21. It was still all new to me. I met Richard Gere there,” Crawford recalled of the party. She was speaking to Oprah’s Master Class (via US Weekly). “We pretty much started dating right away. When I was with him, that’s when I was becoming well-known as well.”
But alas, it didn’t work out. Crawford says it was because they had a 17-year age difference. Despite the divorce, they’ve maintained respect for each other.
“Richard’s a super smart guy, and he’s interesting, and he’s interested, and I learned a lot about the world,” Crawford said. “It was a great chapter in my life.”
Richard Gere’s Second Wife: Carey Lowell
Carey Lowell, like Cindy Crawford, was a model. She is also an actress, known for her work on Law & Order and as a Bond Girl in the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill. According to Observer, Lowell formed a crush on Gere after watching him in An Officer and a Gentleman.
Lowell and Gere married in 2002 but actually had a son, Homer, in 2000. Unfortunately, they split after a decade of marriage. It took the ex-couple four years to finalize their divorce settlement. The divorce allegedly took such a long time because Gere’s massive fortune (estimated to be $250 million back then) and a $4.5 million estate in Bedford, New York were part of the equation.
Alejandra Silva / Alejandra Gere
Finally, it seems that the king of screen romance has finally found his match. The beautiful Alejandra Silva is 33 years younger than Gere, but they don’t seem to mind the age difference at all. Silva is a Spanish publicist, political activist, and philanthropist. She founded the Rais Foundation for the Homeless in 2015, which works to eradicate homelessness in Spain.
Silva and Gere were first spotted together in 2015 when they were kissing on the coast of Italy. Silva later told Hola! that they began dating in 2014, after a mutual friend re-introduced them. In fact, they had met long before because Gere was a friend of Silva’s family! They tried to keep a long-distance relationship but eventually wanted more. They both have kids from previous marriages and would try to see each other every few weeks, when they weren’t with their children. Silva has a son named Albert with her former spouse, Govin Friedland. He was born in 2012.
Silva and Gere Wed in 2018
Silva finally moved to New York to be closer to her love. They tied the knot in 2018. According to People, an insider revealed that both Gere and Silva are practicing Buddhists and therefore had Tibetan monks at their secret wedding.
The ceremony was beautiful,” Silva told Hola! magazine. “We exchanged rings carried by our children. It was so exciting! I have to confess that I shed big tears.”
Their first child, Alexander Gere, was born the following year.
Homer James Jigme Gere
Homer is Richard Gere’s first and eldest son. His mother is Carey Lowell. He was born on February 6, 2000, in New York City. Now 23, Homer is a student at Brown University (per his LinkedIn profile). According to AmoMama, he is studying cognitive neuroscience and visual arts and working on a Bachelor of Art degree.
“Homer is ‘the joy of my life,” Gere told The Guardian in 2002. “Loves music, very fast runner, very smart. Very funny. Pretty quick he learned irony, which is a wonderful quality for any human being.’
Despite Homer’s parents divorcing when he was a teenager, they allegedly came to an amicable custody agreement right away. They also kept the terms of the agreement private. Homer has since followed in his parents footsteps and kept much of his life off of the internet.
Alexander Gere
Alexander was born in February of 2019. His mother shared a photo to Instagram announcing the pregnancy but noted that she needed to wait for the HH Dalai Lama’s blessings first. The post has since been deleted. Per US Weekly, the photo showed Gere and Silva bowing alongside the Dalai Lama and placing their hands on her baby bump.
While his parents have tried to keep their family life very private, they have shared occasional snaps of their beautiful little boy. In April 2020, Alexander became a big brother.
Richard Gere’s Third Son
Alejandra Silva and Richard Gere have never revealed their second sons, and collectively both of their third son’s name. He was born sometime in April 2020 and is about 14 months younger than Alexander. The mysterious little bundle of love was allegedly born on his family’s ranch in Pound Ridge, New York. While his parents don’t show his face on social media, they do share snaps of family life. He is, like his older brother, absolutely adorable!
