5-year-old Jack Buss was playing outside with his mother around their house. But disaster struck when he stepped on an unsafe, hidden well covering. The top collapsed, sending him tumbling 20 feet down into the hole.
“I heard a scream that I’ve never heard before from my son,” his mother told WKRC. She ran to where her toddler had disappeared, to find him barely holding on. He had dropped into the pit and was standing on a small ledge, gripping an exposed pipe.
The well was far too deep for the mother to reach her son, and the toddler was stuck. In a blind panic, his mother screamed for help. It was 11-year-old Juliana Fischer who heard the panicked cry and ran to help.
“I heard these screams, like these screams, and someone saying, ‘Call 911,'” she recalled. And, as she ran to help the trapped toddler in the well, she called the emergency services. But her help didn’t end there. Keeping a cool head, she looked around for something that could solve the problem.
Quick Thinking Kid Saves Trapped Well Toddler
Spotting a ladder nearby, 11-year-old Juliana put two and two together. Staying calm, she proposed a plan to the panicked mom. “I looked around me, and I saw a ladder. I was like, ‘Should I just go grab that?'” said the girl. “She just went and grabbed the ladder herself, put it in the well, and we held it with her father,” the mom recalled.
Lowering the ladder, the toddler was able to climb up out of the well, mostly unharmed. He returned to his mother’s arms with a few scrapes and bruises, but nothing broken. However, the two of them were greatly shaken up.
The emergency services eventually arrived and checked them for further injuries. Since the well has been properly covered to prevent any more kids from falling and becoming trapped.
11-year-old Juliana is being hailed as a hero for her quick thinking and cool response under pressure.
