What happened: According to a news release by the Kentucky Lottery, a couple who have been together for over 30 years won the grand prize of $1,500,000 on a $20 Wild Cash 200X scratch-off ticket.
- The Kentucky Lottery reveals that the couple wishes to remain anonymous. They purchased the ticket from Git N Go on 855 East Laurel Road in London.
- The husband told lottery officials he usually buys $10 tickets from a counter. However, this time he used a vending machine. “I’m surprised that I even bought that ticket,” he said. The anonymous winner said he checked his ticket at least fifty times after scratching off the first two rows. He matched 21 on the ticket to claim the grand prize.
The Lottery Winner Struggled To Find A Safe Place For The Ticket
Days on edge: The Kentucky Lottery claims the husband said he was a nervous wreck after discovering how much his ticket was worth.
- “What if the house burns down? What if I put it in my pocket and rub the numbers off?” the man joked. “What if my truck gets stolen? I just repeated that cycle for the last two days,” he said.
- Like most lottery jackpots, winners can collect their prize in installments or a lump sum, which is usually a lower amount. The couple could have taken their winnings in $75,000 installments over 20 years, but they opted for the lump sum of $738,000 after taxes. The Git N Go also received $10,250 for selling the winning ticket.
- The couple revealed to lottery officials that they plan to pay off their car and home and consider an early retirement with some of the money.
- The husband also said he had some other heartwarming plans for the rest of the cash. “I promised the Lord that if I ever won big, that I would [help] the elderly and children,” he reportedly said. “We’re actually going to just live how we’ve been living, but with the ability to help others.”
