What happened: The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) posted a news release about the incident, which occurred on August 30 at around 1:30 PM.
- Authorities reveal that seven people were boating in the “upper reaches of Flagstaff Lake.” They were on a 2024 18′ Sea-Doo Switch Pontoon boat. The vessel was reportedly near a beach area when the bow started to go underwater.
The boat flipped: The news release reveals that 50-year-old John Morris was driving the Pontoon at the time. He attempted to raise the bow, but the vessel continued to go under and flipped. All seven of the boat’s occupants were thrown into the water, roughly 180 feet from the shore.
- Witnesses on the beach and in the lake rushed to render aid. They were able to bring all seven of the Pontoon passengers to shore, but three were unresponsive.
Authorities Revealed The Names Of The Boat Crash Victims
One remains in the hospital: The MDIFW explains that CPR was performed on the three unresponsive passengers.
- The news release reveals that 53-year-old Farhana Nasir and 23-year-old Kiran Akbar, both from New York, passed away at the scene. Emergency services airlifted 22-year-old Noor Nasir to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical in a critical condition.
- A family friend, Zeeshan Abbasi, shared with WMTV that Nasir is in a coma. “I see that beautiful girl, lying in the hospital, fighting for her life, so you know, fighting for her life,” he said. “And the doctors said, or almost said, that there is no hope.”
- The outlet cites witnesses who claim it took emergency services almost 45 minutes to arrive. A retired firefighter, Kevin Carter, was in the area and performed CPR on the victims. “Being a retired firefighter, y’know, you just have to step in. It’s in the blood,” he said.
Alcohol was not a factor: The news release reveals that detectives do not believe that alcohol contributed to the incident. However, MDIFW does point out that nobody was wearing a life jacket. The crash remains under investigation.
