To start digging a really big hole, it’s usually necessary to get a few permissions. There are regulations in place to ensure the hole doesn’t cause whatever is above it to cave in. So, when it was found that a man had been digging a hole under a highway bridge, an investigation was made.

Mole Man Mischief: The hole-digging man was quickly identified. Troy Coyn Jones, 45, was arrested and questioned about the tunnel. He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail and charged with criminal mischief and trespassing.

  • There is no information about why he was digging the hole under the highway. The investigation hopes to find out just what he was planning. However, at present, they have no idea how long it took to build or if he was living in it. The hole is big enough to sleep in, but it’s probably just a hobby hole.

Hole Repairs

But the hole under the highway is no small dent; it’s a veritable cave. The cavern measures around 9 feet deep and is about 6 feet wide both ways. It’s a considerable hole under the road, and it’s a threat to the stability of the bridge.

  • The hole sits near the I-15/I-215 interchange under a supporting structure for a bridge. It was initially hidden from view, but sharp-eyed highway patrol spotted it before the whole structure came down.

Now, the highway maintenance will have to assess the damage and repair the structure. The hole will have to be filled, but until then, traffic can continue to use the highway. According to the survey, although a larger hole could have become a serious issue, this one isn’t too much of a threat.

Vehicles will be able to continue to the highway despite the small cave attraction. But they are asking people to please refrain from digging under busy roads. There are plenty of other places to start excavating.
