A mom from Turkey reportedly got into an elevator in her apartment building, which then malfunctioned, falling multiple stories. She died from her injuries, and authorities have arrested three people in connection with the tragedy.

What happened: According to a translated report by Turkish outlet NTV, the incident occurred on September 30 in an 11-story apartment building in Tarsus.
- Pelin Yagt Kiyga reportedly exited her 7th-story apartment and boarded the lift to the ground floor. According to Cumhuriyet, the mom was 27 years old and left her residence on the way to work.
- News outlet Haberturk released horrifying CCTV footage from the building. It shows her husband, 34-year-old Gokhan Kiyga, attempting to pry the doors open. Gokhan called for help on his phone while pressing the elevator button. He banged on the door and rushed down the stairs when he realized something was wrong.
- The cabin suddenly dropped with Pelin inside, crashing to the bottom floor. According to the Daily Mail, her husband hurt his foot while attempting to rescue her.
- Emergency services transported the mom to a local hospital after the incident, but she did not survive.
Authorities Have Arrested And Charged Three People Regarding The Elevator Incident
Multiple interviews: Per NTV, the Tarsus Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the elevator crash. Authorities interviewed 17 people, including officials for the elevator company and the site manager. They also reportedly questioned representatives of a company that recently signed a new maintenance contract for the building.
- The translated report reveals that police detained the current and former manager responsible for elevator maintenance. They also detained the property manager.
- NTV outlined claims that apartment residents raised concerns about the lift in a WhatsApp group a month prior. It remains unclear what caused the incident.
- The Tarsus District Governor’s Office reportedly said in a translated statement, “Our citizen, who was seriously injured as a result of the concrete blocks of the elevator cabin, accelerated towards the elevator cabin and fell to the ground with the cabin, died despite all the interventions in the hospital where authorities took her.”
