What happened: According to a news release by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales, officers responded to a call at the 18600 block of Atlantic Drive in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
- The Sheriff explains that 47-year-old Kenyon Levor Coleman was waiting for deputies in a wooded area. He was armed with an automatic rifle. Coleman reportedly shot at the officers, but nobody was injured. “It appears the weapon had jammed and Coleman was unable to clear it,” Gonzalez stated.
- The suspect attempted to retreat into the wooded area, but officers tracked him down and took him into custody. The Sheriff confirmed that they located the weapon.
The Sheriff Reveals Chilling Details About The Situation
Lying in wait: Sheriff Gonzalez explains that authorities believe officers showed up to a “possible fake/swatting call.” Swatting is where someone makes a false report to authorities to get them to respond to an emergency situation that does not exist, per 911.gov.
- The news release notes that Coleman was dressed in black and had a chair set up. He was armed and had “numerous amounts of ammunition.” It remains unclear what led to the police being called.
- Authorities have charged Coleman with Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer and booked him into Harris County Jail. Sheriff Gonzalez concluded, “I thank God none of our deputies were hurt.”
Another firearm incident: Connecticut authorities responded to reports of a gunshot earlier this month at an apartment building.
- The Town of Groton Police Department said they received multiple 911 calls about the incident. They also got a call from 30-year-old Caleb Bean, who admitted to firing the shot. Bean reportedly lives in one of the apartments and told authorities he accidentally fired his weapon while attempting to cycle it.
- The bullet went through Bean’s ceiling and into the apartment above, striking a woman in the leg. Officers at the scene noted a significant loss of blood and said her injuries appeared life-threatening. They applied two tourniquets to slow the bleeding and transported the victim to a hospital.
- Authorities recovered an “AR-15 style” rifle from Bean’s apartment and charged him with multiple offenses, including Assault in the First Degree. He was held on a $250,000 bond, but a judge reduced that amount to $15,000.
