The Fire in the Sky event at Watsonville Municipal Airport attracts all sorts of attractions. The open house festival has airplane shows, flyovers, a patriotic parachute flag jump, live music, and more. It is intended as a chance for the community to come together and a showcase of the airport.
Remote Control Airplane Disaster: However, one of the events went awry. A large remote control airplane lost control over a residential area, resulting in a crash. As the large, unmanned plane came down, it smashed into a home. As a result, two people were injured.
- “Deputies are investigating after a large remote-controlled airplane crashed into a Watsonville home earlier this evening. Two adults were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment,” the local sheriff’s office shared.
The large remote control airplane can be seen, smashed to pieces, on the porch of the house. It has completely obliterated a bench and done serious damage to the wooden structure.
2 Injured By Out Of Control Airplane
The statement from the local sheriff’s department states that the two residents of the house sustained injuries. However, neither of them is life-threatening.
- “Two adults were struck by the remote-controlled plane when it crashed and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.”
The operator of the aircraft was at the event and at the grounds during the remote control plane crash at the house. He was taken in for questioning and has cooperated fully with the investigation. Because it was an airplane crash, despite it being a remote control, the FAA has been involved.
I don’t think a license is needed to fly a remote control airplane, so there is no flying license ot be revoked. But they can be dangerous in the wrong hands. This particular one is not a small aircraft. The images of the crash show how large it was.
In the wrong hands, they could be fatal. The two residents are lucky it wasn’t a direct hit, or they could have been killed.
