A shark attacked a 14-year-old boy while he was fishing with his friends on Saturday evening. He survived, but remains in a critical condition in the hospital.

What happened: According to a news release by Torres Shire Council, the incident occurred at Cook Esplanade, Thursday Island, in Australia.
- The Council explains they are “deeply concerned” about the attack. The 14-year-old reportedly entered the water while fishing when the shark attacked him. “His friends acted with incredible bravery and quick thinking to help him back to safety,” the post reads.
- A report by 9 News says the teen was “mauled suddenly” when he stepped into the water. The outlet notes the shark bit him on the chest. Emergency services rushed the boy to Thursday Island Hospital before airlifting him to Townsville University Hospital.
- Per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the teen also suffered significant blood loss during the attack and life-threatening injuries to his internal organs. It remains unclear what species of shark was involved.
The Mayor Made A Statement Regarding The Shark Attack
Use good judgment: Per the news release, Torres Shire Mayor Elsie Seriat warned of the dangers surrounding water and thanked the victim’s friends for their quick thinking.
- “This incident is very unfortunate, and our hopes and prayers go out to the boy and his family at this difficult time,” Seriat said. “Public safety is of paramount importance for Council, and we strongly encourage everyone to be mindful and aware of the dangers in our surrounding waters and to always use good judgment.”
- The mayor added, “Our small community feels this deeply. We know many people are thinking of the young boy, his friends, and their families. Please continue to keep them in your hearts and prayers.”
- The teen’s family said they are grateful for the “outpouring of community support,” per an updated report by ABC. They reportedly said, “We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who came to his aid, from the first responders to the medical teams who transported him and the healthcare professionals who are now caring for him.”
