It has been revealed that the two children had snuck out of their homes to fool around in New York on October 4th. During their night of mischief, the young women decided to risk their lives by riding on the outside of the J train in Brooklyn.
- At 3:10 a.m. on the Marcy Avenue-Broadway subway, they were found unconscious and unresponsive on top of the subway. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, both girls lost their lives.
This brings the total number of subway surfing deaths in New York to 5 this year. It is a trend that is much more dangerous than the kids doing it realise.
Parents of Subway Surfing Girls Speak Out
The parents of the two girls involved in the fatal subway surfing incident have spoken of their grief. At first, when the police reached out to them, they refused to believe it was their children. They struggled to understand how their kids could have been involved in the tragic incident.
- 12-year-old Zemfira Mukhtaro’s mother didn’t realise anything was amiss with her daughter until her younger child pointed something out on the morning news. She noticed that Zemfira’s skateboard and purse were on the news.
- “Mommy, that’s Zemfira’s,” the child said to her mother, according to WNYW news. “She was supposed to be asleep in her room,” the girl’s mother told the news source. “Now, we’re planning her funeral.”
Her father has shared a heartfelt message online about the loss of his daughter. “No parent should ever have to face the pain of losing a child, and no child should lose their life in such a tragic way. We are struggling to process this immense grief,” he said.
A Dangerous Trend: Suway surfing is nothing new, and people have been doing it as long as the trains have been running. However, it is rarely children who are brave or stupid enough to do it. The two young girls who lost their lives surfing the Brooklyn subway are among the youngest.
