I’m all for theft from large companies, but when that theft is robbing the hard work of well-meaning people, it’s time to draw the line. A couple have been seen stealing a handmade high school mascot from outside a Sonic, and the community is upset.

Labor of Love: A woman, working in the Sonic on East Kings Highway in Shreveport, had made two mascots for the local Captain Shreve and C.E. Byrd High. They were a beautifully decorated alligator and a yellow jacket. She had spent a lot of time and her own money making them.
- They were not only a nice show of support, but also were to be used in a promotion. They had obviously caught many people’s eyes, including two customers.
Statue Stealing
Two customers of the Sonic returned at the dead of night to steal the mascot sign. At around 11:30 pm, the thieves roll up in a car and bundle the alligator into the back. Picking the handcrafted mascot up, they make off.
- The video was taken from surveillance and shared over multiple platforms. The Sonic has asked anyone with any information about the identities of the mascot sign thieves to come forward. It’s less about the monetary value and more about the time and effort lost by the employee.
- The employee, Charlotte Jones, is upset over the theft of her hard work. “I’m pretty sure we probably served these people. If they had asked me, I would have gladly made one for them. But the fact that they stole it … it just shows a lot about their character.”
It’s unclear what the purpose of the theft was, but it can’t be for resale. The Sonic mascot signs aren’t worth a lot in monetary terms. They were simply a show of support from the fast food spot to their local teams. Hopefully, whoever stole them will either return them in the dead of the night or fess up.
However, fast food mascot theft isn’t unusual. In one case, a Ronald McDonald was stolen from a store by a group of teens. But, this is just funny. McDonald’s could afford a little theft.
