What happened: According to a report by CBS News, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Miami International Airport. The outlet cites the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, which reportedly explained that a mother and her 4-year-old were standing in line at the airport.
- The boy was crying while they were queuing for the check-in counter. A woman approached and offered to help “soothe” the child. 23-year-old Alvina Agba held the 4-year-old in an attempt to comfort him. However, she then reportedly left the queue line with the toddler still in her arms.
Agba refused to return the child: A report by NBC Miami says that the mother followed Agba around the airport and found her sitting on the floor.
- Police reportedly say that the mom asked Agba to return her child, but she refused. She then allegedly told the mom that the boy was hers. The outlet reports that Agba then wrapped her arms and legs around the 4-year-old so the mother couldn’t take him.
- A struggle ensued between Agba and the mother, but a bystander intervened. NBS Miami reports that the witness took the child and walked behind a counter. Law enforcement was notified shortly after.
Agba Reportedly Tried To Take The Child Back
Witnesses intervened: CBS News reportedly spoke with Naylet Montano, the bystander who grabbed the boy. “I am a mother, and when I saw the kid in danger, it was my instinct to protect the kid,” she said.
- The outlet reveals that Agba shouted at Montano and tried to take the child back, but three men intervened and stood between them. Police reportedly said that Agba left the scene, and officers took her into custody near Checkpoint 5.
- Per NBC Miami, Agba told authorities she remembered seeing a rainbow wall at the airport. She claimed she was taking the child there to calm him down. Agba reportedly told investigators she didn’t remember what happened after the mother tried to reclaim her child, but said “God told her to do it.”
Authorities charged Agba with battery and interference of custody. Officers transported her to Turner Guildford Correctional Center.
