What Happened: While sitting in the passenger seat of a car, an 18-year-old woman was struck by a piece of rebar as she was being driven down U.S. 189 near Deer Creek Reservoir. The piece of steel flew through the front window.
- According to the highway patrol, the steel pole flew over the concrete divider and bounced off the hood of her car. It then went straight through the front windshield. It missed the driver, somewhat luckily, and instead pierced the body of the passenger.
She was pinned to the seat and left there until emergency services could come and rescue her. The highway was closed in both directions as emergency responders rushed to the scene. A helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.
A Close Shave With Rebar
The woman was attended to on the highway with a rebar sticking out of her body. Both lanes were closed to allow for a helicopter to land. However, it wasn’t needed, and they were able to transport her to a nearby hospital.
Critical Condition: Somehow the woman survived the freak accident initially and was rushed to the hospital in serious to critical condition. She is being taken care of, but it is still unclear whether she will survive. Major surgery and care will be needed to repair the damage done by the rebar on the highway.
Unknown Cause: At this point, it is unclear where the rebar came from that went through the front windshield of the car. “It is unknown whether the stake was lost from a vehicle immediately preceding the impact, or if it was previous road debris that was struck and kicked up,” the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
There are often odds and ends left on the highway. They can fall off the back of trucks or even be the result of faulty cars. However, this situation is a rare one and incredibly unlucky.
