There are plenty of things people can do while drunk that could end up getting them fired, but the one Mariska Hargitay did while on the set of Law & Order: SVU was slightly unusual.

Almost Axed: Playing the role of Olivia Benson in Law & Order: SVU has been a long labor of love for Mariska Hargitay. She’s been on the show since 1999, sporting many different looks and solving even more cases. However, after a drink with one of her stylists, she almost got fired during season 3.
Short Cut: Musicians are expected to keep a certain look and style while filming shows and series. It helps with continuity, and while some things can be explained away, a drastic haircut is a little too much. It was after a few glasses of wine that Mariska Hargitay made the style mistake that almost got her fired from Law & Order: SVU.
- “My hairstylist had a glass of wine, and I really should have known better,” Hargitay told Allure Magazine in an interview. “Maybe he’d thought I’d be aerodynamic when I was chasing perps. I have no idea. We went really short—shorter than anticipated. I almost got fired.”
Pulled it Off
The hairstyle was a drastic change, and the drunken decision by her stylist almost cost Hargitay her job. But, she was too good to get rid of. I expect she got a good telling off, but she couldn’t get axed for the mistake. She simply had to style it out and hope the audience didn’t go too crazy. Next time, she’ll ask permission before a total restyle.
- However, she apparently often relies on her style choices to keep her acting morale up. Speaking about her nails, Hargitay said, “It’s not like anyone is going to compliment Olivia’s gels when she’s flashing her badge,” she explained. “But I do always feel best with a fresh manicure. Many a not-so-great day has been saved by a great classic Chanel Red—just not while shooting.”
Hargitay was almost fired from Law & Order after a drunken haircut. I have to say, as far as drunk work mistakes go, that’s a very mild one.
