What happened: According to a report by AP News, the shooting occurred at the Annunciation Catholic School on August 27. The suspect reportedly opened fire through a window, fatally injuring two students. Twenty-one other people were hurt during the attack, and the suspect allegedly shot themselves.

  • 12-year-old Sophia Forchas was among the most severely injured during the attack. Her family set up a GoFundMe where they revealed the extent of her injuries, describing her as being on “the brink of death.”
  • The fundraiser claims that Sophia’s brother was also in the building at the time, although he was physically unharmed. “The trauma of witnessing such a terrifying event — and knowing his sister was critically injured — is something no child should ever experience,” the post reads.

Sophia’s Family Released A Statement About Her Recovery

Against all odds: Hennepin Healthcare released a statement on the Forchas family’s behalf on Monday. “Sophia is winning! Your prayers are working.” The update reads.

  • The establishment describes Sophia’s recovery as “nothing short of miraculous.” They added, “Each day we uncover new revelations of moments and circumstances that kept her alive and made her recovery possible. There are simply too many to be dismissed as a coincidence.”
  • Sophia’s doctors reportedly remain “cautiously optimistic” as she shows signs of neurological recovery. Hennepin Healthcare notes that Sophia is still on a long road to recovery. However, doctors are planning to move her from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program.
  • “Sophia is strong, brave, and unwavering in her fight toward healing,” the post reads. “We ask that you continue to pray for her as she walks this road to recovery.”

Sophia’s family thanked the healthcare center for their “tireless dedication to world-class care” in their most recent update on GoFundMe. They explain they are collecting donations toward medical treatment, trauma therapy, and lost wages for the family.
