When is a resignation, not a resignation? In Washington, of course. President Obama announced a statement about the IRS during the 5 pm hour EDT yesterday. It was supposed to be a 6 pm. Two minutes before 6, they gave the 2 minute warning. But, in Obama-time, that means 20 to 40 minutes later than that. In the statement, the president said he wouldn’t tolerate conservative groups being targeted, and one of the measures he was taking was to ask for and accept the resignation of the acting commissioner of the IRS, Steven Miller. So how is it not a resignation? When the acting commissioner’s term ends in June and his “resignation” takes effect at the end of that term. He’s just moving on.

The same is true for the State Department officials who were “reassigned” in the aftermath of Benghazi and I am sure the same will be true for the “resignations” being called for by Rep. David Scott of Georgia regarding the VA Hospital scandal in Atlanta.

There is a silver lining in the IRS Scandal. This could be an opportunity to push for the implementation of the FairTax. The FairTax is the national retail sales tax. We need to take this opportunity to educate people on the FairTax. I know for those of us who have been on board for more than a decade, this seems improbable and we can imagine folks don’t know what we are talking about. However, we have to get out of the echo chamber and “teach it.”
The FairTax will replace all federal taxes with a national retail sales tax and would end the IRS.
Hold it, let me wake up from that wonderful dream I was just having. The FairTax would open up markets, bring manufacturing back and create jobs. You can go to www.FairTax.org and find out more.
I know this isn’t likely. It’s clear from President Obama’s statement, his goal is to “restore” the IRS. After all, it’s the engine tapped to oversee the enforcement of Obamacare. He’s not going to change that. I’m not encouraged by what I heard from the president yesterday. When he said, “And as I said earlier, it should not matter what political stripe you’re from — the fact of the matter is, is that the IRS has to operate with absolute integrity. The government generally has to conduct itself in a way that is true to the public trust. That’s especially true for the IRS,” it indicated, he’s going to fight for the IRS. The president can’t imagine a world without it.
