When Pokémon cards were first released, I don’t think anyone would have predicted the violence, crime, and desperation that have come as a result. But here we are, writing about 2 men who have gone on the lam after the theft of $25k of Pokémon cards.

Pokémon began as a simple trading card game with a Japanese cartoon tie-in during the 90s. Quickly, it blew up across the world, played in every park and schoolyard. But it was primarily for the kids. However, as those kids grew up, their fascination with the collectible cards continued. Now, a false economy surrounding the cards has developed. Wildly inflated prices are now attached to them, much to the delight of the companies that own them.
Cards of Crime: As a result of their wildly inflated prices, grown adults are climbing over one another to get their hands on them. There have been multiple reports of fights in queues to buy them, armed robberies of Pokémon card shops, and violent theft.
- 2 men have gone on the run after stealing almost $25k worth of Pokémon cards, risking it all for the shiny bits of cardboard.
Gotta Steal ‘Em All
The Pokémon card theft took place from Storm Crow Games, a game store in Eldersburg, Baltimore. Two robbers walked into the store and snatched three binders of the collectible cards. Although police value them at only $19,000, the store says they’re worth closer to $25,000.
- During a Magic: The Gathering tournament, the two men simply walked through the crowds and took the Pokémon card folders. They were directed toward the back of the store to sign up for the event. While they were here, one snuck into the back office and stole the folders. The other kept watch.
- The two men then went to the front of the shop to dispute the cost of the event before taking their leave. They had a backpack full of the stolen Pokémon cards and went on the run. They have still not been identified.
Stolen Savings: The crime has hurt the two owners of the store. The cards were their savings, and now they have been left with nothing. They are aware that with every passing day, the cards will be gradually sold. They know that it’s unlikely they will ever see them again.
