What Happened: Police were called to a home in Perry County, Pennsylvania. Here, they found a woman dead in the home of a man and his child. She had been shot to death, point-blank, and clearly had been lying there for some time.
- According to the man, the couple had gotten into an argument. Things had escalated, and she threw a book at him. He then allegedly pulled out his gun and shot her to death.
- After murdering his wife, he then left the family home. For 13 hours, his son was left in the home with the body of his dead mother. Only when he returned the next day did the man finally call the police and report what he had done.
Now, Douglas Snyder is being charged with the murder of Samantha Lynn Fields. He is also facing charges for endangering a child. He has been given no bail and remains in Perry County jail.
Whoops
The man was, of course, charged with manslaughter. But he claims it was an accident. He never intended to shoot his wife to death just because she threw a book at him. This is a wildly far-fetched claim. If you’re not planning to shoot someone, why have a gun in your hands at all?
- “I guess I shot her by accident,” he allegedly told investigators. “I, honest to God, did not just shoot my wife.” But he had shot his wife, and then left her with his son for 13 hours before he turned himself in.
“I was pissed, I turned around, snapped, and I shot her,” he also allegedly told investigators.
Pulling a gun out in any situation, be it an argument or a threat, should only be done with the intention of murder. There is no excuse for waving around a deadly weapon. Whether it goes off by accident or as an act of passion, the person wielding it is responsible.
This man will now go to court to find out his fate.
