At around 6.30 pm, emergency services were called to Broad Street at Centre Avenue in East Liberty. There were reports of a driverless vehicle drifting through crowded streets of a festival. It was moving fast enough for it to have knocked over several people.
On arrival, it appeared that there were six victims of the out-of-control car. Five of them were adult females, and one was an adult male. Of the group, three are in serious but stable condition, and two are in stable condition. One refused hospital treatment and made their own way home.
Thankfully, despite the Pittsburgh crowds, nobody else at the festival was injured by the rolling car, and it eventually came to a stop.
Owner Of Driverless Car Cooperative
The man who owned the car that rolled into the crowd of people came forward immediately. They claimed that they were certain that they had put the car in park before leaving it unattended. According to the police report, he remained at the scene and was completely cooperative with the police.
Crowds of people are becoming more cautious in the US about what is being called ‘vehicle ramming attacks.’ Large groups of people have become the target of mentally unwell, homicidal people. In large groups, they are prime opportunities for someone with a car to attack.
The recent attack in New Orleans left many dead, and the city was shaken by its horrible violence. A pickup truck, driven by a man, plowed through the crowds of Bourbon Street during a New Year’s celebration. 14 people lost their lives in the attack, and many more were left wounded.
Thankfully, in this case, it was a simple, if not rather destructive, mistake on the part of the car owner. There was no nefarious intention behind the vehicle ramming into the crowd in the Pittsburgh festival. He took full responsibility, and an investigation as to the cause of the car rolling when it should have been in park will be made.
