A man from Texas has earned himself a very stupid criminal record for breaking into the RSL stadium and stealing a diet coke.

At around 3 am, police local to the Real Salt Lake stadium in Utah received an alert that there was a trespasser. On arrival, they found a man casually sipping away on a diet coke inside the stadium. Enjoying his early morning crime, Sean Christian Matthews, 23, was sitting in a seat on the north side. He was calmly awaiting his arrest.
Anything For A Cold Coke: The man was, of course, promptly detained. He was charged with property damage and burglary. Footage from the scene, as well as his own testimony, showed how the Texas man managed to gain access to the sports stadium and help himself to a cold diet coke.
Breaking And Entering
There was little mystery surrounding how the man had managed to make his way to the north side seating with a crisp beverage. There is plenty of CCTV footage in the stadium, and his whole adventure was caught on tape.
Sean claims that he gained access to the stadium by climbing a wall. The footage backs this up and shows him scaling the outside of the RSL stadium before dropping in. Clearly a little parched from his cat burglar imitation, he sought out the nearest drinks fridge.
- “Sean then explained that he took a Diet Coke from the refrigerator machine, which he later found to be unlocked and accessible by sliding open the doors,” the police booking affidavit says. However, footage from the event tells a slightly different story.
Cracking Open a Cold One: The video of the Texas man breaking into the stadium and then the fridge containing the coveted Diet Coke shows a little more violence in the beverage acquisition. Instead of simply sliding the door open, he used a bar to break in.
- The footage shows Sean breaking into the fridge. It shows him “throwing the retractable belt stanchion into the refrigerator twice and then placing the stanchion to the side.”
It’s unclear why he decided to break into the stadium at 3 am. Surely, he knew that he would be caught almost instantly. And, I get it, Diet Coke is addictive, but there are easier ways to get one. Now he’s going to get a criminal record for an obscene reason.
