At 107 years old, Roscoe Cassidy of Lexington, Kentucky, was the oldest veteran of World War II when he passed away last week.

Scores of friends, family, and strangers came together over the weekend to lay Cassidy to rest and remember a life well lived.

“He loved his shot of Moonshine everyday and he said that was his secret to life,” his son Mike told Lex18.

“He always said ‘I hope you live forever and I never die,'” he said.

According to his son, Roscoe Cassidy never discussed his time serving in the Armed Forces in Europe, aside from one brief conversation with his grandson.

After the large turnout to his father’s funeral, Mike Cassidy said his father would have appreciated the community’s gesture.

“He would be so overwhelmed. It would bring tears to his eyes to know that he was appreciated like that,” he said.
