Kurt Wallace: This is Kurt Wallace and our guest today on Rare is Clint Didier, two-time Superbowl champion and congressional candidate in the 4th congressional district of Washington State, and Clint thanks for being with us today on Rare.
Clint Didier: Kurt, thank you very much for having me on your program, and it’s nice to be on a brand new program named Rare.
Kurt Wallace: Well, we have a few things we want to discuss today a couple things we want to talk about. First you’re a farmer and you’re also a football player so we’re going to talk about both of these issues that you have a lot of experience with. First thing is right now we’re seeing the highest cost for food in the United States that we’ve ever seen.
Clint Didier: Yes, and that’s a tribute to the regulatory action that’s being thrown down on the American farmer. If you look across the country you’ll see the San Joaquin Valley in California was really taking the water was taken away from the farmers due to a, there’s a little bit of an argument about the length of this, two-inch sucker fish some say it’s a four-inch sucker fish – well it’s a fish. And the water was taken away from these farmers the San Joaquin Valley in California was all over the news a couple years ago. This is basically dried up to be a desert.
Now down in the clam basin in Oregon they are taking the water away there for the fish and here in the Columbia basin where I farm they are now saying that this endangered species that we did a study at Idaho State University. It’s called the White Bluffs Bladder Pod, it’s a plant, it flowers a yellow flower and they U.S. Fish and Wildlife says this is a uniques species of its own. We said no it’s not, we took all the Bladder Pods throughout our states, the two bordering states or Oregon and Idaho we took samples from there. We had a DNA analysis done and it all came back as the same plant. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife says well we can’t recognize your study because it wasn’t done by an official agency. They then took the threatened species and listed it as endangered and attributed its demise to the Columbia Basin irrigation project. So, here we go they are trying to take our water away. Now, people want higher and higher food costs? Well you keep taking away these bread baskets that grow the food and raise the food the cattle and this is exactly what you’re gonna get.
So, the people of America – if they truly want to lower the food costs of their American home they have to first of all let the farmers farm. That means you gotta have a reset button on this ESA (Endangered Species ACT) and EPA. Basically, I’d like to defund the EPA. Pull some of their funds away along with these other agencies. And then we have to get rid of the subsidy program where we’re subsidizing corn to be a fuel and with all the studies that I’ve seen it takes more energy to create one gallon of ethanol than what’s in it. So, we are again picking winners and losers as a government and we’re allowing the food costs at the American table to rise because of it.
Kurt Wallace: Now you are a former Washington Redskin tight end and you won two Superbowls.
Clint Didier: Played in three.
Kurt Wallace: You played in three. You played with a fantastic football team. There is this tradition with the Redskins. There’s an issue with the name right now Dan Snyder came out and said that “It’s just historical truths, and I’d like them to understand,” them being people that are upset “as I think most do, that the name really means honor, respect,” – “We sing ‘Hail to the Redskins.’ We don’t say hurt anybody. We say ‘Hail to the Redskins. Braves on the warpath. Fight for old D.C.’ We only sing it when we score touchdowns.”
Clint Didier: Yes, and I was a proud member of the Superbowl XXII team and with Coach Joe Gibbs as out leader and we won that game and I got to catch a touchdown pass from a quarterback by the name of Doug Williams. And I was never so proud in my life. The only other time I was that proud was when watching every one of my children be born into this world. And I got to tell you it was quite an honor to be part of that team and the heritage. And regardless of what they say they think that if they just take away the name it’s gonna solve problems. When they pulled those six patents all they’ve done is they deprived the owner Snyder from making money on that logo of the Redskins. They’re gonna have more Redskins memorabilia out in the public than they’ve ever seen before. They’ve worsened the problem if this was a problem to begin with. Now, I haven’t met a Native American yet that was offended by this. They all want to keep the name – the ones I’ve talked to. I got one of my good friends out here is a Native American and he says he sees nothing wrong with it. In fact, it’s a way for the Native Americans to be remembered in the history of America.
Kurt Wallace: Now your fellow teammate back then, the kicker, Mark Mosley said that – he personally grew up with the Alabama (I hope I don’t butcher the name too bad) -Coushatta Indians and they’re 10 minutes outside of town and he said that the Indians all his life – when he came to the Washington Redskins it was elation in the reservations. They loved the fact that he was playing with the Indians or playing for the Indians. And he said that they considered it an honor.
Clint Didier: Yes, that’s what I’m hearing too. So, I don’t know who these people are that are offended other than the fact that and this is what I think it’s all about is that Snyder, the owner, contributes money to conservative candidates.
Kurt Wallace: Oh interesting.
Clint Didier: And I believe this is an attack on his first, of all the name of the Redskins is a First Amendment right. We are a nation with First Amendment being freedom of speech. And then this is private property which they have deprived him of that now. And if it’s all over the fact that they want to punish him for being a contributor to conservative candidates, that’s a whole other game. And I think that we’re seeing more and more of that out of this administration. I think this is driven by this progressive movement myself.
Kurt Wallace: Well, it’s interesting that you say that because Gov. Martin O’Malley he’s a potential 2016 candidate for the Democratic race for president. He said he thinks that it’s “probably is time for the Redskins to change their name,” and being the governor in Maryland I guess he’s close to the action there and that’s his input on it.
Clint Didier: Well, if that’s the case then we better ready for a complete shakedown in America because the New England Patriots will be offensive to people because the word ‘Patriot’ means that an aggressive America that fought for our freedom and we fought for the WWII, that’s an insignia for power and strength and warriors. ‘The Atlanta Braves’ for crying out loud, we can go down the line here and then there will be the animal rights activists that will take offense to the Seattle Seahawks. I mean where do we end with this nonsense?
Kurt Wallace: Well now Gene Simmons brought up a point, the guy from KISS he said “It really has to do with whether or not the American Indian population has a problem with it, because it’s up to them.” That’s what he’s saying that it’s up to American Indians and he said “I would not like a sports team called the kikes, If you take the historic point of view — and I’m not the one to validate it or not — if Redskins was an insult to American Indians, then absolutely, the team should change its name.” Is this an insensitivity? You played for the Redskins, you’ve been around this for decades.
Clint Didier: Yes, I have and before I played for em we took a family trip to Wyoming and it was Yellow Stone National Park and I remember we took time out from going out during the day because the Washington Redskins during Superbowl VII were playing the Miami Dolphins. And my father was a big Redskin fan he loved the over the hill game. But let’s get the true barometer out here. If this was so offensive, would the people be waiting in lines for decades to buy tickets? Would the sales of the merchandise be where it’s at today if it was so insensitive? Isn’t the true judgement of this the people of America? If they found it that offensive, if it was that demeaning they wouldn’t be participating. And yet we have decades line when I played there it was 30 years in waiting for tickets. The merchandise sold like crazy off the shelves. And there in lies the true detection of insensitive and racially biased language and it’s not because the American pubic is all behind it.
Kurt Wallace: Clint Didier I want to congratulate you on your primary victory. It was, I think, 31% on Tuesday and now you’re in, I guess, a Republican runoff in Washington state for the 4th district with Newhouse, is that correct?
Clint Didier: Yes, and Dan Newhouse has been involved in politics for in fact there’s generations of Newhouses involved in politics an antidote to that is if experience and intellectuals and money was the answer to our problems why are we in this mess? Because that all we’ve had was intellectuals, experience and spending money. And we are in a big problem in the United States of America because we’ve spent ourselves into a hole that I know we can get out of. But we’ve got to rein in the federal government immediately. That’s got to start as soon as possible. We’ve got to get the regulatory action under control. Unshackle our industries, let em run again – let lower taxes.
Basically, it’s just a blueprint of what Ronald Reagan did and he energized this industrial machine called America and it ran strong through the 90’s. And Clinton and Gingrich can take credit for it but it was set up by Reagan. And Reagan got our industries back up and running, people were going back to work. We’ve got to get the work force of the government, we’ve got to get it downsized. And we’ve got to get the private sector increased. That’ll create the tax revenues to payoff our debt and keep this great experiment that our founders gave us called America alive and well for every generation to prosper and to live in freedom.
