What Happened: Practicing nursing in Florida without a license is completely illegal. But that hadn’t stopped Joseph Kinney from applying for jobs. He had had his license revoked in 2022 and continued to apply for nursing jobs regardless.
- However, he wasn’t using his own license to apply for the various positions. The unlicensed nurse was using a fraudulent ID. Over a period of around three years, he had applied for 10 to 15 nursing jobs.
Kinney had been successful. Before his arrest at the job interview, he had managed to land two nursing jobs. However, he had stayed at both for over a week.
Why: Kinney had lost his nursing license in 2022 due to various abuses of power. He was stripped of his rights to nurse for diverting drugs from his employer, driving under the influence of drugs, providing false information, and engaging in unprofessional conduct.
Interview Sting
A nurse hiring manager noticed something amiss with the applications Kinney was making. Hoping to get to the bottom of it, they contacted a sheriff’s office in Florida. Detectives opened an investigation and set up an interview with the man.
- It was immediately discovered that he was using a fraudulent ID. He was arrested at the interview with no struggle. The capture with made with no incident.
The nurse is now facing two counts of practicing health care without a license. Practicing nursing in Florida, or even offering to do so, without a license is illegal. He will have to pay for his crimes, and hopefully, vulnerable people will now be safe.
It is clear that Kinney wasn’t applying to jobs as a nurse for the love of the profession. It seems that it was the contact with drugs and the ability to use them that he was more interested in. Nursing is a dangerous job for someone with a predilection for pharmaceutical drugs.
This is the reason that there are such strict controls over who can and cannot be a licensed nurse. However, Kinney proved that it’s not that hard to fake it.
