British Blogger Jailed Over Posting A Meme

The UK has been cracking down on its citizens with an iron fist. Free speech is forgotten, with people’s right to protest taken away, internet freedoms stripped, and even posting memes being considered a crime.

Videos by Rare

Two clueless policemen were sent to the house of a northern English man in the middle of the night to whisk him off to jail for a meme he tweeted. Stunned, the man filmed and then posted the video online, where it went viral. This isn’t the first time this has happened in the UK, and it won’t be the last.

Malicious Meme: In the early hours of the morning, the police decided they would come and take Pete North, 47, to jail. The man, sitting in his living room, questioned what they thought they were doing. He wisely shot footage of the event.

  • As they detained him, they informed him it was because he had “written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting” and “stir[s] up racial hatred.”. They read him his rights, gave him time to pack some things, and took him to jail for his ‘offensive’ meme.

The post in question simply said, “F— Palestine. F— Hamas. F— Islam. Want to protest? F— off to a Muslim country and protest.” Although it may not be an opinion shared by everyone, it’s still only that: An opinion.

Clueless Cops

Pete, as well as most people viewing the footage, were shocked at the implied censorship enforced by the British police and government. In the footage, Pete can be heard questioning the two stooges.

  • “You’re taking me to Harrogate in the middle of the night for a tweet. Is this what you signed up to the police to do?” Police, however, aren’t paid for their critical thinking skills. They are paid to enforce the will of a government.

Curious Questioning: After he was taken to jail for his meme, Pete was interrogated for a few hours. However, according to North, the person in charge seemed to have no idea what they were even detaining him for. Despite the claim that it was offensive, the officer was unaware of the context. They had been told it was offensive and blindly obeyed.

  • “I said, ‘Yeah, I did post a meme that said, f— Hamas, because Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organisation internationally, including in Britain. Just so we’re on the same page, you do know who Hamas are?’ And he just looked gormlessly and shook his head.” Pete told The Telegraph.

Pete North was picked up at 1:30 a.m. for his posted meme and returned home from jail at 3:00 a.m. As he pointed out, it’s less about charging and more about spreading fear. The grip of the UK government becomes more oppressive by the day.
