Some prudish folks in Ellicott City, Maryland, have caused a fuss about eggplant and peach statues they claim are making them a little hot under the collar.

Naughty Fruit: For those into a little bit of suggestive texting, the peach and eggplant emojis have certain connotations. I won’t go into it too much, but anyone with a dirty enough mind will surely be able to glean what they mean. They say a picture tells a thousand words, but these emojis, for some, only tell two.
- However, really, they’re just a fruit and a vegetable. There isn’t too much more to it. But the council of Ellicott City has a dirty mind. The eggplant and peach statues in their city continually remind them of the filthy messages they send. The offending sculptures have to be taken down. It’s making the councillors too randy.
However, locals and shop owners love the two sculptures and believe they should be allowed to stay. They believe they brighten up the historic town, and bring in customers. They’re rallying together to keep the offensive fruits on the street.
“Mine Doesn’t Look Like That!”
Two shopkeepers in particular are keen to keep the eggplant and peach statues. The big peach sits outside a cafe on the Ellicott High Street, and the owner says it brings her joy and custom.
- “It was this big, beautiful orange peach. And, at first, honestly, I was like, ‘Wow, this is amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.'”
The owner of the Wine Bin sits directly behind the large eggplant statue. He claims that it’s nothing like the crude facsimile, and he should know!
- “I guess I don’t quite understand the innuendo because I have one of those body parts and it doesn’t look like that and it’s not purple, so I’m not sure really how that came about. It’s kind of weird. So, it’s kind of comical that people think that,” he said to 11 News.
But the council is demanding that the eggplant and peach statues be taken down. As a result, the residents have started signing a petition to keep them up. They believe that they add a little joy to the otherwise quiet and historic town.
