What happened: Michael Sherman, a Montgomery County firefighter, comes from a long line of men. His family tree has been filled with over a century of them. The family was beginning to believe that they were only ever going to see more males produced.
- But when Michael Sherman and his wife Joacquia went for their scans, they realised their century-long streak was over. She was pregnant with the first girl in 108 years. Now, his whole family has something to talk about.
Last woman born: The last woman to be born into the Sherman family was in 1917. She was called Orah Belle Sherman and was Michael’s great-great-grandmother.
- “She was a trailblazer in Atlanta,” he told ABC13. “She dealt with the civil rights during the civil rights movement. She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta
108 years is a long time to wait for a girl to be born into the family. But the wait is finally over, and the family is overjoyed. The new little girl is going to be spoiled by generations of Shermans.
The Long Wait is Over
Family shares thoughts: After generations of boys, the Shermans will now finally be able to welcome a girl after a century of waiting. The various grandmothers and wives of the family can’t wait to meet the new baby. And, of course, Michael is proud to be the one to help deliver her.
- “I just feel honoured that, like, finally we’re the ones that are bringing the baby girl after over 100 years. It’s amazing.”
The women in the family, all of whom are married into it, are excited to see the new baby girl. They mentioned that they’re more than ready. They have bags of clothes, cupboards full of dresses. There is no doubt that she will be very well taken care of.
The first girl in a century for the Sherman family may even be a record. They are currently checking with the Guinness Book of World Records.
