The Details: Michael’s Bar and Grill in Manchester, about 20 miles outside St. Louis, was recently the victim of a dine-and-dasher.
- A man came into the establishment and enjoyed a meal.
- Then he paid for his meal with a phony $1,000 bill.
- After the encounter, the Missouri restaurant plastered his face and offense all over the internet.
Missouri Restaurant Fights Back Against ‘Dine-And-Dasher’

The NY Post reports that upon entering the establishment, the man ordered a burger and several side dishes. After enjoying his meal, he handed the server what appeared to be a $100 bill. However, upon closer inspection, the server realized the man had in fact given her a $1,000 bill.
It was an honest mistake, seeing as the bill was only $40, and no one would ever expect to see a $1,000 bill. Yet, when the server went back to confront the man, he had disappeared.
- The NY Post writes, “By the time she returned to confront him, the man had already left with a to-go bag of food and driven off in his Lexus.”
Despite the dine-and-dasher’s antics, this Missouri restaurant did not let the offense go. Instead, employees of the establishment posted photos of the man online along with a description of his offense.
Guilty Conscience: Apparently, the man has a conscience after all. Workers at the restaurant assume that the dine-and-dasher must have seen his photo online and became overcome with grief. They believe this because the very next day, he returned, paid his outstanding bill, and apologized for his actions.
Not only that, but he also left the servers a tip, presumably more for his actions than for outstanding service.
Plans Moving Forward
Unfortunately, this dine-and-dasher with the phony cash is not the first of his kind. The Missouri restaurant admits that this has been happening more frequently lately. When speaking to First Alert 4, server Kristina Moriarty had this to say.
- “We have cameras everywhere,” she began. “We have license plate readers, we have facial recognition that we had to invest in because unfortunately, these things keep happening to small businesses around here.”
She is optimistic that these new protocols will deter theft in the future. Additionally, bartender Dawn Lamb spoke out about the incident.
- “Here’s the thing,” she stated, “if you do this, we are going to expose you, and we’re going to make it aware. So we can again prevent this from happening.”
