Romney says that his family is “heartbroken.”
What Happened: His sister-in-law was discovered deceased in a Los Angeles suburb late last week. It appeared that Carrie Elizabeth Romney plummeted to her death from a multi-story parking garage. At this time, it’s unknown if the death was accidental or a result of suicide.
Prior to her death, Carrie had been separated from Romney’s brother for months. But her death is still hitting the family hard. Romney is asking for privacy for both his and Carrie’s families during this difficult time.
- “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Romney said in a statement to People. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Details of the case: Here’s what we can glean from the case so far.
- Bystanders discovered Carrie’s body on the street near a shopping mall parking garage. This was on Friday, October 10. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene. She was 64 years old.
- Her car was located inside the parking garage.
- Los Angeles County Deputy Brenda Serna hasn’t ruled if the death was accidental or a suicide. Currently, her cause of death is “deferred,” pending more investigation. However, authorities do not suspect foul play in the death.
Prior to her death, Carrie was married to Romney’s older brother, George. George has his own ties to politics as an attorney. He’s also the father of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.
However, the couple split earlier this year after being married for 8 years. Romney’s brother filed for divorce in June, citing irreconcilable differences. Following the divorce, Carrie had requested spousal support. But George Romney appeared to oppose this.
