Authorities have arrested a couple from New York after they reportedly “hot-boxed” a car with a 2-year-old inside.

What happened: According to a report by Local 10, the couple was “hot-boxing” their car with cannabis outside a hotel on Sunday night. “Hot boxing” is where you smoke in an area with the windows and doors shut so the smoke fills the room or vehicle.
- The outlet explains that police arrested 36-year-old Phillip Fraisar of Hamlin, New York, and 27-year-old Kasey Renee Buckmann of Rochester, New York. An arrest report says someone spotted the couple outside the valet area of the Clevelander Hotel at around 9:20 PM.
- Law and Crime cites arrest affidavits, which reportedly claim the couple were drinking tequila and smoking cannabis. Police noted that the 2-year-old is Fraisar’s son. The affidavits say, “The marijuana smoke filled the vehicle, as is commonly referred to as hot-boxing.” The outlet explains that officers found a pistol in the car along with a “large bag of marijuana.”
- Per Local 10, Fraisar had left the vehicle by the time police showed up. They found his son in the car with Buckmann.
The New York Couple Face Multiple Charges
The couple pleaded not guilty: According to Local 10, Buckmann and Fraisar both face child abuse charges. Buckmann faces an additional charge for the possession of marijuana.
- The outlet reveals that the pistol officers found was in the glove box and within “arm’s reach” of Fraisar. He faces an additional charge of felon in possession of a firearm owing to a previous conviction in 2015.
- Per Law and Crime, Fraisar and Buckmann both entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday. They have reportedly asked to be represented by public defenders and have requested a trial by jury. Local 10 reports that Buckmann is held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $1000 bond. Buckmann is held on a $8000 bond.
- A report by People cites court documents that reveal they have since been released. They are due in court for their arraignment on September 30.
