According to a news release by the Orlando Police Department, the incident occurred near West Amelia Street and Chatham Avenue on August 22 at around 3:40 AM. Authorities explain that officers responded to a “disturbance between roommates.” While talking to the men involved in the dispute, a male in his 40s “charged at officers with an edged weapon.” Officers later determined the weapon was a pair of scissors.
The news release explains that the suspect made a “slashing motion” as he rushed toward the officers. Police claim they told him to drop his weapon multiple times, but he refused. They shot him, and he died from his injuries at the scene.
Authorities clarify that the man who attacked the officers was not involved in the initial dispute. They describe the incident as “completely unprovoked” and explain that they had no prior contact with the suspect.
Orlando Police Reveal The Suspect Had A Criminal History
The news release does not reveal the suspect’s identity. However, it does detail his criminal history, which includes “burglary with assault and battery, grand theft, and possession of meth.” The officers were not injured in the attack. Authorities have placed them on administrative leave, although officials explain it’s standard procedure. “As with all officer-involved shootings, FDLE will conduct an independent review of the incident, followed by the State Attorney’s office,” the post concludes.
Deputy Chief Chad Ocuzio answered several questions about the attack in a press conference. He confirmed that the suspect was not involved in the initial dispute and was sleeping in Luminary Green before the incident. The Deputy Chief also said they have identified the man, but aren’t releasing that information. Occuzio clarified that two officers fired their weapons during the incident and an investigation remains ongoing.
Earlier this month, off-duty NYPD officers encountered a man holding what appeared to be a handgun. He ignored multiple requests to put the weapon down and instead pointed it at them. An officer fired a single shot, which hit the suspect while he was still holding the gun.
He died from his injuries, and authorities discovered the weapon was an imitation after the incident. The NYPD shared images of the fake gun on social media, which didn’t appear to have anything on it to suggest it wasn’t genuine
