Of course, it’s essential to pay your waiters a tip when you’re at a restaurant or a bar. The US minimum wage is only around $7.25, which is less than half of what the UK pays. They’re essentially working for free.
Unexpected Charge: But, when the bill was dropped on one Reddit user’s table in a restaurant, there was a whole new, never-before-seen charge. They decided to give a quiet restaurant a chance, but paid for it.
- “Went to a new restaurant yesterday, a new to me place that seemed quiet, and I felt I’d give them a shot. At the end, I check my bill and there’s an extra 20% pre-tip charge labelled Quiet Time Surcharge.”
I understand that restaurants struggle when they’re quiet. But that shouldn’t be picked up by the diners who help remedy the problem. It’s a problem with the food establishment, not the diners. The diner was disgusted by the greedy behaviour. The money wasn’t even going to the bored waiting staff.
Insane Justification
The diner, of course, questioned the staff about the extra charge on their restaurant bill. It was up to them to try to justify the management’s greed.
- “Management says when it’s not busy, you’re basically getting the place to yourself. It’s kind of like flying private instead of commercial,” the staff told the man. They were shame-faced about the whole thing.
Understandably, the diner laughed it off. After all, it’s illegal to charge for anything not advertised. If it wasn’t explicitly said that would be the case, he doesn’t need to pay. Hopefully, they didn’t indulge the egregious money grab from an empty and failing establishment.
As they pointed out, they weren’t chartering a restaurant; they just popped in to see what it was all about. It wasn’t like they planned for it to be empty; it was just empty because it was floundering. They certainly won’t fill it like that.
I am sure they won’t be heading back anytime soon. If they charge for the privilege of being empty, I hate to see what the restaurant charges when it’s full.
