The Texas Tech football team has a weird tradition involving a tortilla that almost resulted in one family being kicked out of the stadium.

Tortilla Traditions: Nobody is quite sure where the tradition of throwing tortillas onto the pitch comes from. However, there are a few theories.

  • One rumor states that when the drinks no longer came with lids, which people used to throw, they switched them out with tortillas. I mean, it’s the obvious choice.
  • Another theory says that the tortilla fad stemmed from an offhand remark from a commentator. He said that Lubbock, Texas, was only good for tortillas and football. As a result, they now launch tortillas on the pitch at many games.

Of course, officials aren’t the biggest fans of the Texas tortilla-throwing tradition. There have been multiple attempts to curtail the act or at least limit it. However, it still happens, despite the regulation.

Family Feud

A Texan family went to see their team play. Cheyenne Toliver and Brandon Jones, and their two young children were excited to watch the game. And, as usual, when a touchdown was scored, tortillas began flying as is the Texas tradition.

Singled Out: One of the kids, getting wrapped up in the fun, picked up a tortilla and launched it along with the rest. But, for some reason, security decided it would be them that they would make an example of.

  • “We didn’t even bring any tortillas in. But the kids picked one up after the first touchdown and threw it, just like we do at the Jones,” the parent said.

The family was then detained on the concourse for 30 minutes while they argued back and forth. It seemed unjust that, out of everyone, they were the ones getting penalised.

  • “They told us they caught us on camera,” the father told KTSM. “We were just shocked, really? You’re kicking out two kids for a tortilla? Out of everyone who threw them!”

Eventually, the security let up and let the family take their seats despite the tortilla throwing. The crowd had noticed the problem, and as they headed back to their seats were greeted with cheers.
