LONGMONT, Colo. — A 34-year-old woman lured an expectant mother with a Craigslist ad and then stabbed her in the stomach and removed the baby from her womb, police in Longmont, Colorado, said Wednesday.
Police said the mother, 26, survived and is expected to recover but the baby died.
The suspect was taken into custody after she showed up at a hospital with the dead infant, claiming she had had a miscarriage.
“Police say the suspect’s husband drove the suspect to the emergency room, thinking the child was alive,” according to KUSA.
Police said the victim did not know her assailant and was responding to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes.
The victim was assaulted at the suspect’s home, police said, and officers heard her calling for help from inside the home when they arrived on the scene.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon, around 2 p.m.
Police said the suspect has other children and there was no obvious motive for the attack.
