Now that Obamacare is widely acknowledged to be in full meltdown after the president’s Thursday “fix,” it’s time find someone to blame.

Media, I am looking at you. You did it.
I am not talking about “You did it” in the harmless sense that Col. Pickering meant it when he tunelessly congratulated Henry Higgins on his amazing success at the Embassy Ball. (We all know that it was Audrey Hepburn that did it.)
I am talking about the media committing a fundamental betrayal of the public’s trust.
You, our lordly media, the Fourth Estate of the realm, tell us that you are the access to the halls of power. The media will investigate wrongdoing. It will “ask tough questions.”
If you, our lordly media, asked tough questions all through the conception and the gestation of Obamacare, then you would not be looking at the absolute meltdown of your darling Lightbringer Obama and his scandal-plagued administration.
If you had put that “but critics say” graf in the pieces you filed every time the president or an acolyte said, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,” then we wouldn’t be in today’s situation where millions of Americans are losing their health insurance and don’t know what to do.
You could have written: “But critics say that Obamacare is designed to force every American to upgrade their insurance policy to government-specified standards. So the president’s claim is dishonest.”
Same goes for the president’s claim that insurance premiums would come down by $2,500.
You should have said of the president’s wonderful plan to let kids stay on their parents’ insurance till age 26: “But critics say that twentysomethings will be in for a big shock when they get off their parents’ plan and have to buy their own insurance.” Again and again.
But enough of that, let us talk about the real conceit of the media: the famous line of Finley Peter Dunne that the press exists to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
Do you know who the afflicted are today? They are the middle class stuck in a no man’s land between the ruling class and the underclass, the people too poor to get all the crony capitalist goodies that the ruling class dishes out to its rich supporters and too rich to get all the welfare handouts that the ruling class dishes out to its underclass supporters.
And do you know who the comfortable are? They are people like you, media, living in some fashionable gentrified neighborhood on the coast or in one of Richard Florida’s creative class “ideopolises.”
And now, because you have failed in your basic responsibility to “speak truth to power” as the lefties say, your wonderful Lightbringer is off the road in the ditch.
If you had done your due diligence then Obamacare would have been different, because enough moderate Democrats would have found the courage to refuse to vote the Obama-Pelosi line. Millions of Americans wouldn’t be suddenly waking up to find that they can’t keep their health insurance. The liberal brand would be strong and sure.
But you didn’t.
You caved in to the groupthink. You cringed before the angry phone call from the White House. You listened to the whisper that you might be in line for a job in the administration.
No, the great liberal hope and the future of liberalism are down in the ditch.
Because you did it. Because you guys didn’t do your job.
