Sheriff Buford Pusser will never have to face the charges brought against him by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He died in a single-vehicle car accident in 1974. He lies in the ground, having possibly gotten away with the murder of his own wife in 1967.

The Official Line: The story goes that Sheriff Pusser was taking his wife for a ride-along to a disturbance on the night of Aug. 12, 1967. The early morning callout took a turn for the worse. The Sheriff said people targeted him in his car.

  • A car pulled alongside his and fired into the vehicle. His wife was killed in the attack, and Sheriff Pusser was wounded. However, no autopsy was ever performed.

Exhumed And Examined

When the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found that there had been no autopsy, they decided to investigate. His wife’s body was exhumed in 2024, and a new investigation was opened. There were a few signs that the crime committed against the Sheriff wasn’t quite as it seemed.

Falsified Evidence: The Sheriff claimed that the crime was committed during a drive-by. However, the autopsy told a different story. It appeared that his wife had been shot outside the car. Her body had then been brought back and placed in the seat.

  • The wife of Sheriff Pusser also showed signs of a nasal fracture. The wound inflicted on Puser’s body also appeared to be self-inflicted.

District Attorney General Mark Davidson for the 25th Judicial District said, “There is probable cause to believe that Pauline’s death was not an accident, not an act of chance, but, based on the totality of the TBI investigative file, an act of intimate, deliberate violence.”

If Sheriff Buford Pusser were alive today, he would face indictment for the crime. There is enough evidence suggesting that this was a murder of his wife rather than a random act of violence. However, when have police ever been subjected to the same law as the rest of us?
