What happened: According to a report by Click 2 Houston, the incident occurred on Saturday at a home in the 9700 block of Mimbrough on Racine Street. A recent report by KHOU 11 reveals that the child died from their injuries.
- The outlet explains that the victim died at around 2 PM on Sunday after suffering from several gunshot wounds. The child was reportedly playing ding-dong ditch with his friends, a game where you knock on somebody’s front door and run away before they can answer.
- The 11-year-old and their friends were allegedly knocking on doors in the area at around 11 PM. Police say one resident left their house and chased the children down the road before shooting one in the back. KHOU 11 explains that authorities have detained a man, and they found multiple guns at their residence. Police ordered them to leave their home with a loudspeaker.
- In an interview with the outlet, Houston Police Department Sergeant Michael Cass clarified that nobody was arrested in connection with the shooting at that time. “We’ve identified a possible suspect from the house. He’s in questioning now. We’re questioning that person, and we’re working with the DA’s office,” he said.
Authorities Do Not Believe The Texas Homeowner Acted In Self-Defense
The suspect may face a murder charge: In an interview with KHOU 11, Sergeant Michael Cass clarified that authorities had not filed charges yet. However, in his opinion, the incident did not look like self-defense.
- “It wasn’t close to the house,” Cass told KHOU 11. “So, it’ll more than likely be a murder charge.”
- The outlet also interviewed a neighbor who was devastated about the incident. “Now, what harm could they have did you?” he asked. “Y’know, playing with a doorbell, and that’s what the part that really kind of hurts the heart. Someone to shoot them in the back they knew there was a kid.”
Cass urged parents to be more cautious in the times we’re living in now. The investigation remains ongoing.
