What happened: Folks utilizing the storage unit location on Milwaukee’s north side noticed that there were children in the area at times when they shouldn’t be. Police were alerted, and an investigation was made.

  • A neighbor had called the police, noting that children had been seen playing there in the summer. They had been seen walking in and around the storage unit with what appeared to be a family. They would leave every morning and return at night. The suspicious activity forced police to delve deeper.

Six Children: The investigation by the police found that there were a total of six children inside the storage unit. They had been locked inside and left by whoever it was that was in charge of them. The kids ranged in age from 2 months old to 9 years old.

  • As a result, two adults have been arrested in connection with the children’s situation. They are a 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man.

Shocked Residents

Additional info: The reason for the children locked inside the storage unit still isn’t clear. But the news has shocked the other people using the facilities. It appears none of them had any idea that people were using them for these reasons.

  • “Never seen kids walking around here, no. Not at all,” Marc, a storage customer, said. “That’s horrible, you know, where are the parents?”

According to the SafeStor website, there is 24/7 surveillance at the location. However, this is being called into question. If this is the case, then the manager and security are either complicit or it simply doesn’t work.

However, the relationship between the children locked in the storage unit and the arrested adults isn’t clear. It could be that they were simply their parents, fallen on hard times, and left with no other option for housing.

It is suspected that there are more than 60,000 families living homeless every night in the US. Given the choice between a storage locker and the streets, most people would choose the former.
