What happened: Many of us will have hitched a ride in the back of a truck or flatbed at some point. It’s a common way to hitchhike from one place to another, despite it usually being slightly illegal. But the risk is usually worth it. However, usually the vehicle offering the ride isn’t going to be a refrigerated one.
When police came to investigate a traffic accident involving a tractor-trailer, they were surprised to see two girls in the back. The tractor was going from Huntington to Salt Lake City, which is more than a 2-hour trip. The driver, 28-year-old Jacob Ortell Scott, was shocked to hear about the two women riding along.
- The statement, released by police, explained, “While investigating the traffic accident, Troopers conducted an inspection of the tractor-trailer. While a Trooper conducted the inspection, he observed two sets of eyes in the refrigerated trailer.”
A Cold Ride
Police investigate: When the police explained that there were two girls in the back of the trailer during the traffic accident, the driver was shocked. However, after turning to his passenger and talking, he seemed to know what was going on.
The driver explained that they had two girls riding along for the journey. The police opened up the trailer to find them both sitting in a refrigerated space. It was at a temperature of around 30°F, which is far too cold for two girls to be sitting in for hours.
- The two girls, aged 14 and 12, were in the trailer with some bedding and luggage. The two weren’t visibly injured, but were very shaken by the whole ordeal. “They were very scared, very nervous. They obviously had no idea what was going on,” the highway patrol noted.
Thankfully, there was nothing more than family doing a favor. “We determined that they are family members. We felt that they were just trying to get to Salt Lake, and instead of trying to find a way to travel safely, they decided that this truck was going anyway, so they put them in the back,” they noted.
