Everyone knows you don’t join the army for the food, but monkey brains is taking it a little too far.

Craig Morgan, singer of “Redneck Yacht Club,” spoke to Taste of Country about his experiences in the army. For 17 years, he worked in the US military, performing many operations overseas. During that time, he had the opportunity to see a few unusual and remarkable things.
Brains: But, it was one thing in particular that really stuck in his mind. When the outlet asked him what the worst food he had ever eaten was, he immediately knew. Army food isn’t great, but it was while on tour in Costa Rica that he experienced the worst.
- Monkey brains were served to country singer Craig Morgan as food while in the army. He was shocked to have the disgusting ‘delicacy’ while on a recon mission.
- “Monkey brains. I ate monkey brains on the border of Costa Rica and Panama one time,” he told the outlet. “We were pushing rebels south down through there, and we came up on this village, and in order to get the information, we had to sit down with them, and that was one of the things that they served.”
Mmmmmm Brains
So, while country singer Craig Morgan picked the brains of the villagers in Costa Rica, he also ate them. They’re considered a rare treat for some, often made into soups and even fried and made into sandwiches. It certainly wouldn’t be on my list of small plates, but there is no accounting for taste.
Army food is often composed of rations and scavenged items. The MRE packs given to the military do their best to replicate meals, but they often fall short. However, the inventive chefs in the military industrial complex have whipped up some crazy dishes.
Of course, Craig Morgan went above and beyond, being served monkey brains, but the alternative isn’t much better sometimes. Army MREs can get really nasty. One dreaded army meal that all soldiers hate to eat is the vegetarian and cheese omelet, also known as the vomelet.
If given a choice between that and the brains to eat, country singer Craig Morgan might go for the latter if he ever went back to the Army.
