Burning a meal is always super annoying. All the prep work, the financial spend, and the time invested are ruined, and it’s time to start again or just get on the delivery apps. But, apparently, throwing out burnt food could be a serious hazard to your health and your house.

Sizzling Sausages: Before you throw your burnt food into the trash, Ally, an EMT on TikTok, says it’s imperative you leave it to cool. Fire doesn’t only need flame to start. It can get going from nothing more than heat. So, throwing burnt food in the trash could result in an unexpected fire.

  • As explained by the EMT, hot food should be left to cool because, although it “looks under control, if you have burnt food, don’t throw it into the trash until it cools somewhere safe, like the sink or stove top. Fire doesn’t need a flame to start from something really hot. When you burn food, part of what makes it burn is that it gets really, really hot, and inside the black charred burnt parts of the food, there can actually be little embers like a campfire.”

Too Hot, Too Spicy

So, next time you burn a meal, leave it to cool. Even douse it in water before throwing it away. Just make sure that the food is cooled and not secretly smouldering after being burnt. Dousing it in water will usually stop the smell from filling the house, too.

Easy Mistake to Make: Everyone is going ot burn a meal or two here or there. It’s almost unavoidable. But, dumping it in the bin immediately isn’t the answer. Usually, it’s better to rinse it first. This not only reduces the smoke and therefore the smell, but it can also help with cleaning the burn off whatever you were cooking with.
