Python Problems: It’s not every day that you would expect to find a python in an In-N-Out. In fact, nobody should be finding them in the US at all. They’re not native, but have been turning up all over the country.
- The employee in the fast food store was shocked to find the enormous snake at the drive-thru. They called the local animal handlers, and they quickly whisked it away. After posting it online, the owners came forward.
- The family says that the huge python’s name is Henry, and it escaped from their home in San Bernardino. However, it was found miles away in Monrovia. The Pasadena Humane Society, which collected the python from the In-N-Out, says they have no idea how the animal managed to travel so far.
- I guess it was in the mood for one of their famed burgers.
Snakey Situations
This stray snake is only one of many python problems the US is facing at the moment. People like to take the tropical animals and keep them as pets. However, they can grow to enormous sizes, sometimes topping 22 feet long. This makes them a bit more than a handful for some owners, and they just let them go.
- The problem is, the python has very few natural predators in the US. This allows them to dominate the food chain. They can just laze around all day, eat whatever they want, breed, and grow to massive sizes.
Everglades: In the Florida Everglades in particular, the python problem has become a real threat to local wildlife. After a hurricane destroyed local reserves, and a few people let their big snakes loose, they have become rampant.
- The snake problem has become such an issue that local authorities have announced open season on hunting the invasive species. They hold competitions every year, challenging people to capture and kill the most. There is also a bounty on killing them, awarding hunters with monetary rewards.
The Python at In-N-Out might seem unusual, but for Florida folk, it’s just another fast food trip.
