What happened: CBS Sunday Morning released several snippets of an interview with the singer and actress on their Instagram page.
- During one segment, the interviewer, Tracy Smith, says, “There were moms trying to, I guess, cancel you.” Cyrus replied, “Yeah. I was the first person to maybe ever be canceled, I guess.”
- Smith asks about how her life felt during her early career. “Well, y’know, I didn’t know until I was older, actually, how brutal it really was. It was very challenging for other people, but for me, it was a good time,” Cyrus said.
- The singer acknowledged she had fun, but also said she didn’t realize how harsh the criticism against her was until she was older. “But at the time, it was awesome,” she exclaimed.
Was Miley Cyrus Really The First Person To Be Canceled?
Maybe not the first: It’s hard to pinpoint the first celebrity to ever be “canceled,” but many commenters took umbrage with the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer’s claim.
- One popular reply on the clip simply reads, “Britney Spears would definitely disagree.” Another says, “Cut to Madonna and Janet and Sinead and the Dixie Chicks rolling their eyes.”
- One other commenter says they think Cyrus meant she was the first to be canceled online, with social media playing a pivotal role. ” I believe she understands that numerous people, mostly women who are outspoken, have been canceled before,” they added.
Staying sober: The ‘We Can’t Stop’ singer also spoke on sobriety in a separate clip. She told the interviewer that saying sober keeps her “100% ready, 100% of the time.”
- “I love that if anything comes in, an opportunity, I can say yes knowing that I’m going to be ready. I don’t have to get ready,” she said.
- The ‘Midnight Sky’ singer also revealed the difficulty in managing any sort of substance use. She said she gets to “trim out so much of the preparation,” knowing she’s already to go.
