43 years after he vanished without a trace, investigators believe to have found the remains and the vehicle of Air Force vet and detective Amos Shook in a lake about two miles from his old home in Caldwell County, N.C.

Investigators pulled Shook’s car, a 1968 Pontiac Catalina, from a lake Tuesday and in that vehicle were human remains and a wallet belonging to the missing man.
Shook went missing on Feb. 19, 1972. His family members have always presumed him dead, but they have also been seeking closure over the decades.
Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones told WSOC that the family is getting just that.
“It put some closure on something they’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” he said.

Jones went on to say that investigators do not believe this was a suicide, nor do they suspect foul play, but the autopsy may reveal more. If not, we may never know what happened, Capt. B.J. Fore told the Charlotte Observer, and the case will be considered closed.
“Unless the medical examiner says the autopsy shows some type of foul play, we may never know what happened,” he said. “We don’t know his state of mind, and most of his family are probably in their 80s now. But we’re glad to have brought the family some closure.”
The car, which was submerged 30 feet underwater, was found with the help of sonar technology.

According to the New York Daily News, the surviving Shook family members, many of whom are in their eighties, plan to hold a news conference Friday afternoon at the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
