Kurt Wallace for Rare: The Senate GOP is changing with the likes of Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Rand Paul — a more libertarian, tea-party style conservative that is willing to stand up to big government Democrats and establishment Republicans on principle. Is America ready for more senators fighting against big government politicians and big government in general? Georgia, a red state, has two GOP senators both who voted recently to fund the bill which gives the Obama administration the money it needs to implement Obamacare. Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss is retiring from Georgia and will have a new Senator in 2014. Is Georgia ready to join Utah, Texas and Kentucky in electing yet another senator willing to fight? Joining us is Congressman Paul Broun running for U.S. Senate in Georgia. His website is paulbroun.com and Congressman Broun, thank you for being with us.
Congressman Broun: You might want ought to spell Broun for folks, because it’s B R O U N. It’s spelled with a U instead of a W. My family that can’t spell or can’t pronounce it, I’m not sure which, but it’s paulbroun.com — when they check me out there. But to answer your question, Kurt, I believe absolutely America needs people who are going to fight for we, the people, and that’s what my good friends Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Mike Lee have been doing in the Senate, and I have been working with them, trying to figure out how we’re going to stop this disaster called Obamacare. It’s already hurting our economy. It’s already killing job production; we’re seeing as its rolling out that it’s going to break budgets from family budgets to business budgets, all the way up to the national budget. And we must do everything we can to put healthcare back in the hands of the people — we, the people. And that’s what my Patient Option Act would do. It would empower patients and doctors to make healthcare decisions, and get the federal government out of it. I’ve got the positive solutions for we, the people, and that’s what I’m fighting for.
Kurt Wallace for Rare: Now, the Citizens United President David Bossie, in an endorsement of you, said, “To put it frankly, Dr. Paul Broun has a steel spine and will not waver on conservative issues where others might bend. Dr. Broun is the best candidate for the job, and I’m proud to support a patriot who will take on the Washington establishment in the United States Senate.” Now, is Georgia ready for a conservative senator who will stand up against the establishment on both sides of the aisle?
Congressman Broun: Absolutely. And they want somebody who can find some positive solutions for the problems that Georgians face, and that’s what I offer them. That’s what I’ve been doing here in Washington ever since the 10th district elected me, a little over six years ago. I’ve been fighting the establishment. I’m the true conservative in this race. I’m the true individual who’s representing across the board, we the people’s interest. Not the special interests — the big-packed communities: the individuals who want more government, larger as is. There are candidates who do so, but I’m not one of those. I represent the working people of Georgia. I represent the poor people of Georgia. I represent the senior citizens on limited income, trying to lower their energy costs, trying to lower their food costs, trying to lower their cost of their health insurance and their cost of their doctor bills. And that’s what my Patient Option Act would do. What I have that no other candidate has are positive solutions to the problems we face as a nation. And I’m going to stand very firm on those. And what Dave Bossy was talking about is that there are four questions I ask about all legislation. All four have to be yes for me to vote yes. Every piece of legislation I write are based on these four questions. The first is, is it constitutional, according to the original intent in the enumerated powers of Article 1 Section 8? Number two, does it fit the Judeo Christian biblical principles that our nation was founded upon? Number three, do we need it? Number four, can we afford it? We can’t afford Obamacare. It’s an ominous bill. It’s a disastrous bill. We must repeal it, and it’s what Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and just a handful of us here in the House did. We led the charge to force this fight. And I was right in the heart of forcing our Republican leadership and forcing the Congress to have this fight about Obamacare, because it’s already hurting all Americans across the board. The only people it’s not going to hurt are the rich people in this country, and that’s what the establishment folks support — is the big business, the rich people. In fact, Barack Obama has said I will exempt my big business buddies, but we’re going to stick it to the middle class; we’re going to stick it to family businesses. We’re going to stick it to the working people who are trying to make a living, trying to take care of their family’s needs, but we’re going to put them in this government program that is going to cost them more money and give them less options and it must be stopped. And that’s what we went to the matt for on this — trying to stop this juggernaut of Obamacare, because it is so destructive. And I’m going to do everything I can to stop it.
Kurt Wallace for Rare: You’ve been attacked in recent weeks. The Hill, an October 8 article said, “Establishment Republicans have publicly fretted about Broun winning the primary.”
Congressman Broun: Indeed, they should, because I’m trying to send powers back to the states or the people. The Establishment Republicans basically are just cheap Democrats; they just want an efficient, socialist government. What I want to do is send those powers back to the states or the people, as the 10th amendment says it should be. I want to devolve power out of Washington and put it back in the hands of the legislators in our governor in the state, and more importantly, devolve money out of Washington and leave it in Georgians pockets. And leave the power in their pockets. Not some government bureaucrat in Washington D.C. who’s overpaid and is going to tell them what kind of treatment that they can have, what kind of medicines that they can get, whether they can go in the hospital or not, whether they can have the surgery or not, we’ve got to stop the government from making decisions for Americans. So the establishment doesn’t want me here, because I’m going to take their power away. So the establishment’s scared of me. And that’s the reason that I’ve become Enemy #1 for Chuck Schumer and the former Democratic National Committee Chairman Dr. Howard Dean.
Kurt Wallace for Rare: Yeah, Dr. Howard Dean actually said on MSNBC, criticizing your statement that Obamacare would, “Destroy everything we know as a nation.” Howard Dean said, “I don’t know where these people get their MDs, but it must be in a state lottery or something.”
Congressman Broun: Well, he’s belittling the Medical College of Georgia, where I went to medical school, which is an excellent school. But the thing is that’s it’s a personal attack that Howard Dean and Chuck Schumer and even the establishment Republicans here in Washington are leveling at me, because, you see, more money means more power in Washington. But it means less money and less control of Georgians. I want to send the power and the control back to people — we need to get rid of the Department of Education, so that Georgians can run the education for their own children. We need to get rid of the EPA, though we must be good stewards of our environment. We should not be – let’s not be — spending billions of dollars on a federal agency that is running up the costs of gasoline and all energy, and who is that hurt most, but poor people and senior citizens on limited income? That’s the policies of this administration. That’s the policies of the left. But it’s the policies, also, of big government. And we have Republicans that are fostering this idea that Washington has all answers for everybody. No, Georgians have the answers for Georgians. We’ve got to send those powers back to the states or to the people. And that’s what I’m fighting for.
Kurt Wallace for Rare: Well, your legislation actually speaks for itself. And I read the legislation. It’s the Patient OPTION Act, being an acronym on the word OPTION — Offering Patients True Individualized Options Now. This would fully repeal Obamacare — adds patient friendly forms, tax incentives for doctors who treat the endogen.
Congressman Broun: Actually that’s an innovative piece about it, because what we do is in the four decades I’ve been practicing medicine, I’ve literally given away over hundreds of thousands of dollars of my services to the people. And I get nothing for that. And doctors all over this country do the same thing. And what we do is we give doctors a tax credit for delivering healthcare to people who can’t afford it. So that takes care of people with preexisting conditions that can’t afford to buy the insurance. Plus we also give a tax credit for people that contributed to free clinics or sliding scale clinics to take care of poor people so that we take the money away from the bureaucrats in Washington D.C. We put it where it should be and that’s taking care of patients that need the care instead of paying these high-powered high-priced bureaucrats in Washington D.C. That’s the kind of policy that I promote. That’s the reason that the establishment are afraid of me.
Kurt Wallace for Rare: Well you’re definitely offering a more free-market solution to healthcare, even focusing on state’s involvement rather than being focused on what D.C. can do.
Congressman Broun: Absolutely. And that’s what I continue to fight for. We’ve got to go back to the ideas that made this country great. And those ideas of limited government, low taxes, a vibrant free enterprise system, unencumbered by government taxes and regulations. An idea of a strong national defense — that’s where we should be spending money. I’m in the military, in fact, I’m in the active navy reserve today. I’m a U.S. marine, initially, and I was actually deployed to Afghanistan. We don’t have the strong national defense that we should be having. That’s where we should be spending money. So we’ve got to build up our national defense structure and our intelligence gathering capability as a nation to keep us secure. And then we’ve got to go back to the idea of a stable monetary supply and stable money with value, and we’ve got to back to the idea of personal responsibility and accountability. Those are the principles that made this country great. Those are the principles that I stand strong on. Those are the principles that I’ve been operating under as a U.S. Congressman. Those are the principles that I will stand firm on as a U.S. Senator. And the reason I’m leaving a very safe House District seat to run for the U.S. Senate is that one U.S. Senator standing firm on principle can be much more effective in effective policy in how legislations handle than one doing so in the U.S. House. We are in an economic emergency as a nation. We are in a liberty emergency as a nation, because we are losing our freedom. We are losing our liberty. I’m fighting for individual liberty. Both parties are guilty of spending money we don’t have. Both parties are guilty of creating this out-of-control government that’s spending too much, taxing too much, regulating too much and borrowing too much. It’s already hurting our economy. It’s hurting job creation but most importantly, it’s going to crush the future of our children and our grandchildren. I’m running for our grandchildren’s future, because we’ve got to give them the opportunities to have a good paying job, to live free so that they can be successful and take care of their families. And big government is going to steal that from them. It’s morally reprehensible of what both parties are doing, in my opinion. So I’m fighting both parties, and I’ll continue to do so, because I’m representing the people of Georgia. No matter what their economic status is, and that’s what I’ll do as a U.S. Senator.
