25-year-old Hector Valles was trapped, unconscious behind the wheel of his burning SUV at the time officers Ryan Nielson and Autumn Soto arrived on the scene, the New York Daily News writes.
The cops were able to get Valles out of the vehicle and onto the ground. Then they dragged him to safety. Police say that Valles crashed into a steel pillar after swerving off of the road.
It is not yet clear why that swerve occurred.
Police can be heard saying “stay with us” repeatedly as they dragged the man to safety. Valles was taken to a hospital in Dallas and remains in intensive care there.
Officer Nielson told Fox 4 that they were just doing their job.
“I can’t say that this particular situation has happened all the time, but I think it was just another day at work for us,” he said.
