Outrunning the police has never been harder, with better quality cameras, wearable tracking devices in our smart gadgets, and now, also drones. A young man, trying to flee the police, has been shown in released footage being easily followed by a drone, unable to hide.

It used to be a fair challenge. Helicopters are large, have limited fuel, and can’t go to certain places. Police cars have to stick to roads. It wasn’t guaranteed, but with a bit of quick thinking and some street knowledge, a would be criminal could sometimes escape, even on foot.

Drone Pursuit: Now, however, the police are utilising drones. The machines that could have been the answer to all our instant delivery needs and hover car technology are being weaponised by the police and the military. The future of crime solving is here.

  • As a result, police are now able to stay sitting in their cars while a nippy little drone chases down criminals for them. No need to even set the Dunkin’ coffee down. Just run them till they’re exhausted, and pick them up.

No Chance For a Criminal

The footage captured by the drone shows the criminal blasting across a multilane highway on foot. This would pose serious issues for a squad car. He then ducks into the suburbs, which would be ideal for losing a chopper. However, the criminal has a relentless drone over his head. There is no escape.

Stealing Glory: The police simply waited until the unaware perp thought he was safe. He had no idea there was a drone watching his every move. They move into the house he’s waiting in and pick him up. He was probably not even aware that the small drone had been following him from a height.

  • As police technology progresses and the use of drones becomes more commonplace, the chances of not being surveilled will decrease. Drones are remarkably cheap pieces of equipment and easy to deploy.
  • In this case, the drone was used to stop a perp. But the technology is still a bit scary, especially about how it may be used in an authoritarian government. Today it’s a fast-moving criminal, tomorrow someone will be peaking through your curtains, making sure you’re not using profanities.
