What happened: According to a news release by the Town of Groton Police Department, officers responded to reports of a gunshot at the Phoenix Park Apartments. The incident occurred on September 14 at around 10:52 PM.
- The Police Department revealed that they also received a 911 call from 30-year-old Caleb Bean, who lives in one of the apartments. He admitted to accidentally discharging his weapon while attempting to cycle it. Bean told authorities that he fired into the ceiling, and the bullet hit a woman in the apartment directly above his.
- News outlet WFSB cites an arrest warrant that says Bean told a witness, “I’m the one who did this. What can I do to help?”
- When officers arrived, two neighbors and the victim’s partner were attempting to render aid using a “makeshift tourniquet.” The bullet struck the woman in the right leg, and officers noticed significant blood loss. The news release notes the injury “appeared life-threatening,” and officers applied two tourniquets to slow the bleeding.
- Emergency services placed the victim on a stretcher and wheeled her three floors down to an ambulance. They transported her to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, where she received emergency surgery. Authorities explain that doctors then kept her in intensive care.
