What happened: According to a news release by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested 58-year-old Matthew Raymond Rambo of Hobe Sound on Tuesday. He had an active arrest warrant, and an officer detained him at a traffic stop along US1.

  • Officers reportedly noted that the suspect was “suffering from symptoms consistent with the ingestion of narcotics.” They also discovered 9.7 grams of crack cocaine in his vehicle and other incriminating items.
  • Authorities took Rambo to the hospital, where he told medical staff he had ingested an ounce of cocaine in an “attempt to destroy evidence.” The news release points out that they found plenty of that evidence in his car alongside cash and a gun. After being cleared by medical staff, officers transported the suspect to the Martin County Jail.

The Florida Man Ingested A Potentially Lethal Amount Of Drugs

An ounce is more than you think: CBS 12 interviewed Sheriff John Budensiek, who revealed more details about the traffic stop.

  • “He was taken out of the car and pretty rapidly started mimicking or showing some signs of a cardiac event,” Budensiek said. “He was sweating profusely. Things were not going right,” he added.
  • The Sheriff also said that the ounce of cocaine Rambo ingested was potentially fatal. “You can overdose and die on a gram of cocaine if you don’t have the tolerance for it. So an ounce of cocaine is a lot of cocaine.”

Multiple charges: The news release explains that Martin Rambo faces the following charges, alongside those outstanding on his warrant:

  • Possession of Cocaine
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Resisting Without Violence

Another cocaine concealment: A judge sentenced a Texas truck driver last month after officers at the Sarita Border Patrol checkpoint discovered drugs in his vehicle.

  • A K9 unit reportedly flagged the truck for a closer inspection. Authorities claim the driver spilled urine inside the vehicle to mask the smell of drugs. Officers also found chili powder, which is often used for the same thing.
  • Investigators located “22 bundles of cocaine weighing approximately 24 kilograms hidden inside a blue toolbox under the bed.” They also found evidence on the driver’s phone of a previous drug smuggling attempt.
  • US District Judge David Morales sentenced the trucker to 36 months in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release.
